HOW TO USE THIS BOOK

The INDEX is located at the very front for easy access. Simply open the
cover and you can immediately find the page to refer to by indentifying the
problem area of the machine. The sections are also arranged in alphabetical
order in the book.

Since many areas of the machine affect each other, and problems are described
in many different ways by operators, some problems were entered in more than
one section. For instance, a malfunctioning shift might be described as a
SHIFT problem, or might cause SELECTION OF WRONG CHARACTERS, or cause
a locking KEYBOARD. (Three different sections of the book.)

Once the problem area has been defined, turn to that section and look for the
specific complaint. Since operators tend to describe the problem in their own
words, the COMPLAINT has been described as nearly as possible the way the
operator told the service technician what was wrong. As always, it is best to
quiz the operator and ask if there are any samples of the problem. Also ask
if the machine can be made to duplicate the problem. Following the COMPLAINT
is the PROBLEM section, which gives a description of what the actual problem
was, or what area of the machine was actually malfunctioning. Following that
is the SOLUTION, which describes what was done to correct the problem. If a
part or specific area or adjustment is referred to, it will be identified by the
number used in the "SELECTRIC" TYPEWRITER ADJUSTMENT PARTS MANUAL.

The problems are listed more or less in order of most common occurrence, so it
is best to start at the top of the list and work down. Bear in mind this does
not include all possible problems. Also, generally not included are calls due
to obviously broken or loose parts. Some of the harder to identify ones will
be included. If you are still unable to locate or resolve the problem, try
checking a different section that might be related to the one(s) you have been
looking at. If you cannot find a description in the COMPLAINT sections,
check in the PROBLEM sections to see if anything there sounds familiar or
logical. If this still fails to identify the problem for you, don't give up. All
things are possible, and anything can go haywire on machines. Just apply all
your powers of observation and you'll amaze yourself at what you can figure
out on your own.

The names of two aerosol chemicals are used quite frequently throughout this
book. One is Channel Master, a silicone base lubricant which also serves as
an excellent cleaner and solvent for gummed up parts. The other is Tun-O-Wash,
a non-residue degreasing spray which does a good job of flushing oil off
parts. Either one of these may be obtained at most electronic supply stores,
or equivalent substitutes may be used.

INTRODUCTION

The purpose of this manual is to provide a quick reference for service problems
encountered on IBM Selectric typewriters and the solutions for those problems.
It is simply a collection of hundreds of service calls organized in categories
according to the area in the typewriter malfunctioning and the type of complaint.

Since this manual was written with simplicity and speed in mind there are
several things it is not.

It is not a Selectric Typewriter Training Course.
It is not a complete Service Manual.

It is not an "all-inclusive" Troubleshooting Manual.

Some of the reading in this Manual may seem silly & redundant, namely the
"Complaint" sections. Please bear in mind these are very nearly direct quotes
from the Operators and as you will or have already discovered, Operator's
descriptions of typewriter malfunctions .can sometimes be humorous, not to
mention deceptive to the technician. Also a wide variety of complaints may be
generated by the same malfunction on the typewriter, which is why you may
notice the same adjustment appearing several times in a section.

No attempt has been made in this Manual to cover all problems encountered
when servicing the Selectric Typewriter. It is simply a guide to aid the
relatively inexperienced or new Service Technician to pin-pointing some of the
most common problems encountered.

Since this is not a Training Manual, it is assumed the Technician has some
knowledge in making adjustments on the Selectric Typewriter. Most important
of these are the rotate and tilt homing procedures. Also, each Technician
should have or acquire a copy of the following IBM Publications.

"Selectric" Typewriter Adjustment Parts Manual Form 8241-5939
"Selectric " Typewriter Part Number Manual Form 8241-5103
"Selectric" Typewriter Service Manual Form 241-5615-2
"Selectric III" Service Manual Supplement Form 8241-6176-0

The most important of these is the "Selectric" Typewriter Adjustment Parts
Manual. These publications may be ordered by calling IBM Direct and asking
for the Education Department. At the time of this printing this number for
IBM Direct is: 1 800-426-2468.
